All Hands

When you grow up rural, summer afternoons look like this: your dad is building you a deck on your waterfront studio and your mom is using the drill and your uncle, the only legitimate carpenter in this painting, is showing your father how to do something, and there are neighbours or wives or friends standing in the background, usually with a beer, and a few dogs running around, and your townie boyfriend is somewhere out of the frame, trying his best. Meanwhile, you’re taking the photo from inside the studio while you’re working on a painting and you’re nearly six months pregnant and you know all these people that are helping you are going to help your son and that you’re going to do your best to make sure he grows up like you did, where all hands were on deck all the time and caring for each other looked like working together and everyone’s loud and the jokes are crass.

That’s what All Hands is. 💙
